Rapier Company specialises in Vanguard and stealth/covert actions. Although the entire Chapter prides itself on its ability to conduct stealth operations when required, the marines of Rapier Company make such actions their primary concern. Consequently, when Chapter Master Kaitana declared his crusade against the Sons of Magnus, it was to Captain Valdir and the brothers of Rapier Company that he turned to lead their hunt.
Rapier Company maintains a flexible command structure, and although Captain Sorren Valdir is its nominal Commander, he frequently delegates command authority and responsibility for specific actions to his lieutenants, the company Chaplain, and on occasion even the squad Sergeants. Not only this, but the Company is frequently accompanied and commanded by Epistolary Garrandol Pallas, one of the Chapter’s Librarius and a warrior steeped in the arts of concealment and deception. It is Epistolary Pallas who divined the presence of the Cult of a Thousand Truths on Constantinium, and he who led the initial ambush of their forces in that sector. Pallas is sometimes accompanied by his protege, Gilead Poe, a relative novice within the ranks of the Librarius although one that still holds the rank of Codicier. Poe is a far more garrulous character than his mentor, unusual in a member of the Librarius, and is extremely well thought-of by the more senior members, who see him as one who bridges the gap between those who manipulate warp-powers and the rest of the Chapter.
Squads within the Company are named after natural phenomena such as meteor strikes or hurricanes
Captain Sorren Valdir (Rapier Company - III)
Sorren Valdir is the longest-serving Captain of the Swords of Dawn, a veteran of the Indomitus Crusade where he served with distinction, engaging in the well publicised actions on Vorlese and Gathalamor as well as innumerable other clandestine operations behind enemy lines.
Valdir is a quiet character, and leads his men through a deep bond of trust and mutual respect rather than inspiring oratory or being the first to the fray, and his Vanguard role is particularly suited to his leadership style, as he often cedes control of an action to accompanying command staff or his individual squad leaders as the situation demands.
Hideous burns cover most of Valdir’s face and neck, the result of the spiteful death throes of Valdir’s heroic destruction of a Tyranid artillery battery during action on the world of Eleusis as the Swords of Dawn battle constantly to resist the intrusions of Hive Fleet Dagon. Although physical appearance means little to an Astartes, Valdir is rarely seen without a full face mask and on the battlefield he wears a stripped down version of the Infiltrator helmet, usually swathed in a cameleoline hood with only a pair of glowing bionics visible within its depths, and the Captain’s gaze misses nothing.
Valdir’s favoured battle-tactic is one he calls the ‘Hidden Blade’, and it involves suckering the enemy into a position from which a devastating counter-attack can utterly destroy their ability to respond and press an attack. It frequently involves the use of decoy units to occupy a strategic position on the battlefield and to that end he is often found commanding units of Infiltrators directly. These units lay down significant fire, enticing an enemy response on their position, using canny positioning to force the enemy to advance on their position before unleashing their retaliation, often in the form of overwhelming fire from supporting units that until that point had remained hidden. Valdir is particularly fond of using Inceptor units in this role, allowing them to skyfall directly onto his location before unleashing the plasma-hot fury of the Emperor upon their enemies.
